#330: How To Stop Playing Small with Brit Barron

August 10, 2020

Listen on…

In today’s episode, I chat with my good friend, Brit Barron, who just released her very first book. And let me tell ya, it’s so freakin’ good!

It’s called WORTH IT: Overcome Your Fears And Embrace The Life You Were Made For. This book shares stories from Brit’s life — such as going from being a megachurch pastor to coming out and leaving the church, her experience of being a Black woman in America, and other experiences that illustrate how she was living fearfully inside of a framework that someone else had created.

She so bravely shows her story of growth and also challenges her readers to break out of their own box and step into who they are meant to be.

Check out the episode below:

  • [05:00] Beans (aka Brit) has always dreamt of writing a book — she wanted to tell a story that pushes everyone to be true to who they are. So, using her own experiences, that’s exactly what she did.
  • [10:04] Why are we so afraid of change? Well, because all change has loss tied to it. Beans shares that if you're longing for the way something used to be, you're already in a different place. Holding on to an idea that's not even reality anymore, is only keeping you stuck.
  • [15:41] Beans asked herself a powerful question, “Was her life a reflection of who she wants to be or a reaction to people she doesn't want to upset?” This was a transformational moment and helped her to get clear on what was stopping her from going for the things that she wanted in life.
  • [21:39] The easy thing to do isn't always the right thing to do. We’ve all heard this before, and man, oh man, it’s true. Beans had to completely shift her mind to understand that resistance is actually a good thing.
  • [23:41] Beans talks about that deep knowing that something is the right thing to do. She says that when we question if it’s the right thing to do, we are just using it as an excuse to get out of doing the hard thing. But here’s the kicker, we can all do hard things. And that, my friend, is where growth comes from.
